Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is an Orthodox Christian parish serving Asheville and Western North Carolina. Our community includes lifelong Orthodox Christians, converts to the faith, families who have been part of Holy Trinity for generations, and those who have only recently found their home in the Orthodox Church.

Holy Trinity is a parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, within the Holy Metropolis of Atlanta, under the spiritual jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Our History

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church was founded in Asheville in 1922 by a small community of Greek immigrants seeking to preserve and pass on their Orthodox Christian faith. Without a church of their own, the community initially gathered for worship in local churches and private homes.

By the early 1930s, the growing parish was renting space in the Moskins Building for worship and Greek School. Later that decade, the community purchased its first permanent home at 66 Market Street, providing space for regular worship, Sunday School, and the developing life of the parish.

In 1953, Holy Trinity purchased the M.V. Moore estate on Cumberland Avenue and transformed the property into a community center. Construction of the present church began in 1957 and was completed in 1958. The following year, Father Nicholas Spirakis arrived as Holy Trinity's first full-time priest.

Holy Trinity continued to grow in the decades that followed. A major renovation completed in 2007 renewed the church while maintaining its traditional Byzantine character.

Beginning in the fall of 2024, Holy Trinity entered a new period of growth and renewal under the leadership of Father Ioannis Capones. The parish undertook major investments in sacred iconography and the beautification of its grounds while revitalizing and expanding ministries for children, youth, adults, and families. This period has also been marked by renewed participation in parish life and the continued growth of the community.

More than a century after its founding, Holy Trinity continues the work begun by those first Orthodox Christians in Asheville. Rooted in their legacy and looking toward the future, our parish brings together people from many backgrounds throughout Western North Carolina to worship God, grow in the Orthodox Christian faith, care for one another, and pass that faith to generations yet to come.
